There's something about Treasure Island in the last hour before sunset. The light turns soft and gold, the crowds thin out, and the Gulf goes still enough to mirror the sky. It's one of my favorite stretches of coastline to shoot in Tampa Bay, and it was the perfect backdrop for this family's session, one that came with a little extra meaning built right in.
A Family Session with a Sweet Twist
This wasn't just a family portrait session. Mom, dad, and their son came out to the beach not only to capture where they are right now, but to celebrate where they're headed. Mom is expecting, and we made sure her growing bump had a starring role throughout the gallery. There's something really special about photographing a family mid-transition like this. In a few months there will be one more set of little footprints in the sand, and these images will always mark the moment right before everything changed.
We kept things relaxed most of the session. Their son ran ahead to chase the birds, dad embraced mom for a few frames, and in between we slowed down for the quieter moments: hands resting on a belly, foreheads touched together, a family of soon-to-be-four looking out at the water. Golden hour does a lot of the work here. The low sun wraps everyone in warm light and makes even a simple walk on the beach feel cinematic.
Why Treasure Island Works So Well for Family Photos
Treasure Island is one of the most underrated spots in Tampa Bay for beach portraits. The sand is wide and soft, the dune grass adds beautiful texture without crowding the frame, and the beach access points make it easy to get to a quiet stretch without a long walk. Compared to some of the busier beaches nearby, it's easier to find that stretch of open sand with nobody else in the shot, which matters a lot when you're trying to capture genuine, unposed moments as a family.
For families with young kids, that matters even more. There's room to run, gentle enough waves for little ones to play in safely, and enough space that we're never rushing to dodge other beachgoers walking through the background.
Tips for Your Own Beach Family Session
A few things that made this session work so well, in case you're planning one of your own:
Book golden hour. The hour before sunset gives you the softest, most flattering light of the day, and it's especially forgiving for maternity portraits.
Let the kids lead a little. Some of the best images from this gallery happened when we let their son just be a kid, running, splashing, and exploring, instead of forcing posed smiles.
Plan simple, coordinating outfits. Soft neutrals and light fabrics photograph beautifully against the sand and water without competing with the scenery.
If you're announcing a pregnancy, say so ahead of time. Knowing in advance let us plan specific shots to highlight mom's bump naturally throughout the session, rather than as an afterthought.
